Tree Surgery in Brighton by First Choice Tree Surgeons

After experiencing one of the hottest summers in recent years, many trees across the UK are showing signs of stress. Extended periods of high temperatures, limited rainfall and dry soil can all have a significant impact on the health of both mature and young trees. While many homeowners focus on watering their lawns and plants, trees often need professional attention to remain healthy and safe. The Woodland Trust advises that prolonged periods of drought can place significant stress on trees, particularly younger specimens.

In this article, we’ll explain how hot weather affects trees, the warning signs to look out for, and how professional tree surgery services can help protect your property and landscape.

How Heat and Drought Affect Trees

Trees are naturally resilient, but prolonged periods of heat and drought can place them under considerable stress. When soil moisture levels drop, trees struggle to absorb the water and nutrients they need to thrive.

Some common effects of extreme summer weather include:

  • Wilting or curling leaves
  • Premature leaf drop
  • Dead or dying branches
  • Cracked bark
  • Increased vulnerability to pests and diseases
  • Slower growth

Even large, established trees can suffer during long dry spells, especially if they are already weakened by age or disease.

Signs Your Tree May Need Professional Attention

It’s important to spot problems early before they become more serious. You should consider contacting a qualified tree surgeon if you notice:

  • Large dead branches in the canopy
  • Branches hanging over your property
  • Splits or cracks in the trunk
  • Significant leaf loss during summer
  • Fungal growth around the base of the tree
  • Leaning trees following dry weather

Ignoring these warning signs could increase the risk of falling branches, particularly if heavy rain or strong winds follow a prolonged heatwave. If you have large or overhanging trees from outside your property you could get free help from Brighton Council, visit the website here for more information on this.

How Tree Surgery Services Can Help

Professional tree surgery isn’t just about removing trees. A qualified tree surgeon can assess the health of your trees and recommend the most appropriate course of action.

Common summer tree surgery services include:

Crown Reduction

Reducing the overall size of the crown helps minimise stress on weakened branches while maintaining the tree’s natural shape.

Crown Thinning

Removing selected branches improves airflow and allows more light to pass through the canopy, helping reduce wind resistance and improving overall tree health.

Deadwood Removal

Removing dead or damaged branches helps prevent them from falling unexpectedly and reduces the risk of injury or property damage.

Tree Health Assessments

An experienced arborist can identify signs of drought stress, disease or pest infestations before they become major issues.

Watering Trees During Hot Weather

Many people assume mature trees don’t need watering, but during extended periods of drought, even established trees can benefit from additional moisture.

Some useful tips include:

  • Water deeply rather than little and often.
  • Water early in the morning or late in the evening.
  • Apply mulch around the base to retain moisture.
  • Avoid watering directly against the trunk.

Young trees are particularly vulnerable and should be monitored closely throughout the summer.

Preparing for Summer Storms

One consequence of hot weather is that it is often followed by thunderstorms and strong winds. Trees weakened by drought are more likely to lose branches or suffer structural damage during these conditions.

A preventative inspection by a professional tree surgeon can identify weak limbs before they become hazardous.

Why Regular Tree Maintenance Matters

Routine tree maintenance not only keeps your garden looking its best but also helps:

  • Improve tree health
  • Reduce safety risks
  • Encourage healthy growth
  • Prevent costly emergency work
  • Protect nearby buildings and vehicles

Regular inspections are particularly important after prolonged periods of extreme weather.

Spring is the perfect time for UK homeowners to give their trees the care they deserve. After months of winter weather, trees benefit significantly from a bit of attention to stay healthy, safe, and attractive through the growing season. But what exactly should be on your spring tree maintenance checklist? This guide covers everything you need to know from pruning and inspections to legal considerations and safety tips.

Why Spring Tree Maintenance Matters

As the weather warms and trees begin to leaf out again, spring offers a prime window to assess your trees’ health and structure. Proper maintenance at this time can:

  • Encourage healthy new growth
  • Improve safety around your property
  • Reduce the risk of storm damage later in the year
  • Help prevent disease and pest issues

Taking a few proactive steps now can save you time, effort, and money in the long run.

1. Begin with a Visual Inspection

Start by walking around your garden and visually inspecting each tree. Look for:

  • Damaged or dead branches — These can pose safety risks and should be addressed promptly.
  • Lean or unstable trunks — May indicate structural problems or root issues.
  • Signs of disease or decay — Such as fungal growths, cavities, or discolouration in the bark and leaves.

Early detection of problems means you can tackle issues before they worsen.

2. Prune Deadwood and Diseased Limbs

Once you’ve identified dead or diseased wood, pruning is next on the list. Pruning at the right time helps reduce the risk of infections and supports healthy regrowth. Best practice for pruning is outlined in British Standard BS3998, which provides professional guidance on tree work and pruning techniques such as thinning, crown lifting, and crown reduction. These recommendations ensure that pruning supports the tree’s natural form and health.

For complex pruning tasks or larger trees, consider hiring professionals who follow these industry standards to ensure safe and effective results.

3. Check for Overgrowth and Interference

Next, check if any branches are:

  • Touching buildings or roofs
  • Growing over driveways or walkways
  • Encroaching on utility lines

Overgrown branches can cause damage, block light, or interfere with power lines. You may need to trim these back to improve safety and reduce future problems.

4. Consider Structural Pruning for Young Trees

Spring is also an excellent time to structurally prune younger trees. This helps establish a strong framework that will support the tree as it grows. Focus on removing competing leaders or crossing branches that could lead to weak growth.

5. Mulch Around the Base

Mulching helps retain soil moisture, regulate soil temperature, and suppress weed growth. Apply a layer of organic mulch around the base of your trees, keeping it a few centimetres away from the trunk to prevent rot.

6. Fertilise if Necessary

If your soil is poor or trees look stressed, a slow‑release fertiliser applied in early spring can give them a boost. Always follow product instructions and, if in doubt, have your soil tested.

7. Monitor and Manage Pests and Diseases

Once buds break and leaves emerge, pests and diseases become active. Regularly check foliage and stems for:

  • Leaf spots or unusual marks
  • Caterpillar or aphid activity
  • Unusual dieback or thinning of the crown

Prompt action — whether through professional treatment or physical removal — can help minimise long‑term damage.

8. Know Your Legal Obligations

In the UK, not all tree maintenance is straightforward. Some trees may be protected or governed by local rules — it’s important to know what applies to your garden.

For example, in Brighton, homeowners managing privately owned trees are responsible for maintenance themselves, and the local authority does not carry this out for private land. (Brighton & Hove City Council) Additionally, certain trees may be protected by Tree Preservation Orders (TPOs) or located within conservation areas, meaning that you must seek council permission before carrying out significant work.

Before you start any extensive pruning or removal:

👉 Check whether your trees are protected by a TPO or within a conservation area through the Brighton & Hove City Council tree information pages:

9. When to Hire a Professional Tree Surgeon

While many spring tasks — like mulching and light pruning — can be DIY, some situations absolutely call for professional help. These include:

  • Large trees with high canopies
  • Trees with structural concerns or disease
  • Tree removal or stump grinding
  • Work near power lines or buildings

A reputable and experienced arboricultural team is worth investing in. chopping a large tree that had fallen across a driveway in Brighton

There are few sights as stark and immediate as a mature tree that has succumbed to the elements, especially when it lands precisely where it shouldn’t. Here at First Choice Tree Surgeons, we often face challenging situations, but few are as critical as an emergency call-out. We recently received one such call from a distressed homeowner in Brighton – a large, ancient tree had fallen, completely blocking their private driveway and cutting off access to and from their property.

chopping a large tree that had fallen across a driveway in Brighton

The Call That Stops Everything

The phone call came in the early hours, a frantic voice explaining the predicament. A significant tree, later identified as a venerable oak, had been uprooted during a severe overnight storm. It lay sprawled across their driveway, a formidable barrier of timber and branches, trapping their vehicles and preventing any entry or exit. Beyond the immediate inconvenience, there was a clear safety concern; the homeowner was worried about the instability of the remaining root plate and the sheer weight of the trunk.

Our emergency response team immediately mobilised. We understand that in such situations, time is of the essence. Not only is access crucial for the residents, but a fallen tree can present ongoing hazards, particularly if parts are still under tension or resting precariously. Our first priority is always to secure the area and assess the safest method of removal.

Arrival and Initial Assessment in Brighton

Upon arrival at the Brighton property, the scale of the challenge was evident. The oak, a magnificent specimen in its prime, had indeed fallen directly across the asphalt driveway. Its massive canopy, still laden with leaves and smaller branches, formed an impenetrable thicket, while the main trunk, easily over a metre in diameter at its base, lay like a colossal fallen sentinel. The uprooted root plate, a terrifying disc of earth and tangled roots, stood almost vertically where the tree once proudly stood, looking precarious.

Our lead arborist, with years of experience in emergency tree felling and removal, began a meticulous assessment. This isn’t a job for a quick chainsaw cut. We needed to consider:

Tension Points: Where was the tree under compression, and where was it under tension? Cutting in the wrong place could lead to uncontrolled movement or dangerous kickbacks.

Weight Distribution

How could the heavy sections be managed and lowered safely without causing further damage to the driveway or surrounding property?

Access for Equipment

Despite the blockage, we needed to position our machinery and operate safely.

Clearance

Ensuring no utilities (cables, pipes) were compromised beneath the fallen tree.

Disposal Logistics

Planning how to efficiently cut and remove such a vast quantity of timber.

The first step was to establish a safe working zone and brief the team on the phased removal plan. Safety cones were set up, and a clear communication protocol was established.

The Strategic Dismantling: A Tree Surgeon’s Precision

Removing such a large, fallen tree is a multi-stage process that combines powerful machinery with skilled, precise handwork.

  1. Branch Removal (De-limbing): We started at the extremities, systematically cutting away the smaller branches and foliage. This not only reduced the overall bulk of the tree but also allowed us to gain better access to the main trunk. Our team used a combination of chainsaws and polesaws, carefully stacking the brash (small branches) for chipping.

  2. Sectioning the Trunk: This was the most critical phase. The main trunk was too heavy and long to be moved as a single piece. Using large, powerful chainsaws, our arborists began to section the trunk into manageable pieces. This required immense skill to ensure each cut was safe, releasing tension progressively and preventing the trunk from rolling or shifting unexpectedly. Cuts were made from both sides (top and bottom) to prevent pinching and ensure a clean separation. The sound of the chainsaws reverberated through the quiet Brighton neighbourhood as the immense timber was gradually tamed.

  3. Mechanical Assistance: For the heaviest sections of the trunk, manual lifting was impossible. We employed specialist rigging equipment and our powerful chipper to handle the larger logs. Each log section, once safely cut, was either carefully rolled to a clear area or, for the truly massive pieces, secured and loaded onto our timber lorry.

  4. Root Plate Management: The uprooted root plate still stood as a testament to the tree’s former grandeur. We carefully detached any remaining soil and roots from the driveway, cutting the larger root sections and breaking down the plate into pieces suitable for removal. This process revealed the immense power of nature and the sheer force required to uproot such a well-established tree.

  5. Site Clearance: Once all the timber and brash were removed, our team meticulously cleared the driveway. This involved chipping all the smaller branches into usable mulch, sweeping away sawdust, and ensuring no debris remained. Our goal is always to leave the site cleaner than we found it.

A Clear Path and a Satisfied Client

After several hours of intensive, careful work, the driveway at the Brighton property was completely clear. Where a formidable oak once lay, there was now a pristine, accessible path. The homeowner was immensely relieved, able to drive their car once more and regain full access to their home. Their gratitude was palpable – a testament to the efficient, safe, and professional service provided by our dedicated team.

This emergency tree removal in Brighton served as a powerful reminder of the unpredictable force of nature and the essential role of skilled arborists in maintaining safety and functionality within our communities.

cutting back a large tree in Brighton city centre

Urban environments rely heavily on healthy, well-maintained trees. They provide shade, improve air quality, reduce noise pollution, and add natural beauty to city streets. But when trees become overgrown, they can quickly shift from being an asset to a risk. Managing and cutting back overgrown trees in urban areas is essential for safety, aesthetics, and the long-term health of the landscape.

Why Overgrown Trees Are a Problem in Cities

Unlike rural or woodland settings, trees in built-up areas grow in close proximity to homes, public paths, roads, and power lines. Overgrown branches can cause a range of issues, including:

  • Damage to buildings such as roofs, gutters, and windows
  • Obstructions to street lighting, signage, or CCTV
  • Safety risks if heavy branches become unstable
  • Blocked access for pedestrians and vehicles
  • Reduced airflow and light affecting gardens and nearby plants

Regular maintenance not only prevents these problems but also encourages healthier, stronger trees.

The Importance of Proper Pruning Techniques

Pruning trees is not as simple as cutting away unwanted growth. Urban tree management requires skill, knowledge, and an understanding of how each cut impacts the tree’s structure.

Correct pruning improves:

  • Tree health
  • Growth direction
  • Structural stability
  • Light distribution
  • Resistance to disease and pests

Improper cutting, however, can stress the tree, introduce disease, or increase the likelihood of branch failure.

For safe, expert tree pruning, homeowners and property managers in West Sussex often rely on qualified professionals such as First Choice Tree Surgeons.

When Should Overgrown Trees Be Cut Back?

Urban trees may need cutting back when:

  • Branches are touching roofs or buildings
  • Trees interfere with public pathways
  • Overgrowth blocks sunlight into gardens
  • Storm damage causes instability
  • Branches threaten vehicles or power lines
  • The tree has become misshapen or top-heavy

Regular inspections help identify issues early before they become dangerous or costly.

Why Professional Tree Surgeons Are Essential

Cutting back overgrown trees in urban areas involves risks such as falling branches, working at height, and navigating tight spaces near buildings. Professional tree surgeons are trained to assess hazards, use specialist equipment, and carry out controlled pruning with minimal disruption.

Hiring experts ensures:

  • Safe removal of hazardous branches
  • Compliance with local regulations
  • Protection of wildlife habitats
  • Proper care that supports long-term tree health

cherry tree removal in Hove

Trees are a beautiful and vital part of our environment. They enhance our gardens, provide shade, support wildlife, and improve air quality. However, as much as we love them, there are times when **tree removal becomes a necessary and responsible choice**. Whether for safety, health, or practical reasons, understanding when and why a tree should be removed is an important part of good property and landscape management.

At **Friendly Tree Services**, we believe in preserving trees wherever possible. Yet, in certain circumstances, removal is the safest and most effective solution for the property and surrounding environment. Below, we explore the most common reasons why tree removal may be necessary — and how to do it safely and responsibly.

When a Tree Becomes Dangerous

One of the primary reasons to remove a tree is **safety**. Over time, trees can become structurally unstable due to age, decay, or storm damage. Large limbs may crack or become hollow, while roots can weaken, leaving the tree vulnerable to falling.

If a tree leans significantly, has visible cracks in the trunk, or loses large branches during storms, it may pose a serious risk to people, property, or nearby structures. In such cases, professional assessment is crucial. A qualified arborist can evaluate the level of danger and determine whether pruning, cabling, or full removal is the best option.

At Friendly Tree Services, our experts prioritise safety — carefully removing hazardous trees using specialist equipment and techniques to protect both people and property.

Disease, Decay, and Poor Health

Just like any living organism, trees can suffer from **disease and decay**. Fungal infections, insect infestations, and root rot are common problems that can weaken a tree from the inside out. While some conditions can be treated, others cause irreversible damage.

A diseased tree can become brittle, lose its leaves prematurely, or develop large cavities. If left untreated, it may spread disease to nearby trees or plants. Removing the affected tree helps prevent further spread and protects the overall health of your garden or woodland area.

Signs of tree disease include:

* Fungal growth at the base or on the trunk
* Soft or spongy wood
* Dead or falling branches
* Discoloured leaves or abnormal growth patterns

Professional diagnosis is key. If the disease is too advanced, removal is often the safest and most environmentally responsible choice.

Root Damage and Structural Interference

Tree roots can be surprisingly powerful. Over time, they may grow beneath driveways, patios, or foundations, causing cracks and structural movement. In urban and suburban areas, this is a frequent reason for tree removal.

Roots searching for water can also infiltrate drains and pipework, leading to blockages and costly repairs. While root pruning or barriers can sometimes help, in severe cases, the only long-term solution may be complete removal of the tree.

When a tree’s growth begins to threaten buildings or underground utilities, it’s important to act early. A professional inspection will help determine whether removal or root management is the best approach.

Overcrowding and Lack of Space

In many gardens, trees naturally compete for light, space, and nutrients. When planted too close together, they can become overcrowded — leading to stunted growth, poor air circulation, and a greater risk of disease.

Removing one or more trees can help the remaining ones thrive, ensuring they receive adequate sunlight and moisture. Similarly, if a tree has outgrown its space — shading your property excessively, blocking views, or encroaching on power lines — removal might be necessary for practicality and aesthetics.

A well-managed garden balances greenery with open space, creating a safe, healthy, and visually appealing outdoor environment.

Storm or Wind Damage

Severe weather can cause significant damage to trees. High winds, heavy snow, and lightning strikes can split trunks or snap large branches, leaving trees unstable or beyond recovery.

Sometimes, a partially damaged tree can be saved through selective pruning or structural support. However, if the main trunk or root system is compromised, removal is often the only safe option. Leaving a damaged tree standing increases the risk of it collapsing during future storms.

Our team at Friendly Tree Services specialises in safe tree removal following storm damage, ensuring the area is cleared efficiently and safely.

Construction and Landscaping Projects

Tree removal is sometimes necessary when **building or landscaping projects** are planned. Whether you’re extending your home, laying new driveways, or redesigning a garden, trees may obstruct access or interfere with foundations.

In these cases, removal should be carried out with care and consideration for local regulations. Some trees may be protected by preservation orders, meaning permission from your local council is required before removal.

At Friendly Tree Services, we can advise on all legal requirements, carry out professional assessments, and handle removals responsibly, recycling timber and green waste wherever possible.

Dead or Dying Trees

A  dead tree poses one of the greatest safety hazards in any garden. As the internal structure dries and weakens, branches can break without warning, especially in windy conditions.

Aside from the danger, dead trees can also attract pests such as termites or beetles, which may spread to nearby healthy trees. Removing dead or dying trees promptly helps maintain a safe and healthy landscape.

If you’re unsure whether a tree is dead or dormant, our arborists can perform a professional inspection to determine its condition and recommend the best course of action.

Aesthetic or Environmental Reasons

Sometimes, tree removal isn’t about damage or danger — it’s about creating a more balanced and appealing landscape. A tree that overshadows your garden or blocks sunlight to your home can make the space less enjoyable.

Removing one problematic tree can dramatically improve light levels, garden health, and property value. Responsible removal followed by replanting smaller, better-suited species can also enhance biodiversity and sustainability.

Conclusion: Responsible Tree Removal Matters

Tree removal should always be a last resort — but when it’s necessary, it must be done safely, efficiently, and with environmental care. At **Friendly Tree Services**, we combine years of experience with modern equipment and eco-conscious methods to remove trees responsibly.

From initial inspection to waste disposal, our team ensures every job is handled with professionalism, safety, and respect for nature. Whether you’re dealing with a dangerous, diseased, or unwanted tree, we’re here to help you make the right choice for your property and the environment.

As the leaves turn golden and the evenings draw in, Autumn is one of the most important times of the year for homeowners to think about their trees. Regular inspections by a professional tree surgeon not only keep your garden looking tidy but also protect your home, family, and neighbours from the risks that storms and strong winds can bring.
